蒸汽爆炸是指水剧烈的沸腾或是闪蒸成蒸汽的现象，可能是因为水本身的过热、被其中细微的细屑快速的加热、或是因为和熔化的金属反应而升温（例如堆芯熔毁后，核反应堆中熔化的燃料棒和冷却水产生的燃料-冷却剂相互作用）。若压力容器（例如压水反应堆）运作在超过气压，也可能会产生蒸汽爆炸的情形。水由液体变成气体的速度非常快，其体积剧烈的膨胀。蒸汽爆炸时，若没有容器的限制，爆炸会将蒸汽、沸腾的热水、加热的物质往各个方向散播，因此有可能造成烫伤或是灼伤。
