茅根又名茅草、白茅草、白茅根，为禾本科茅根属多年生草本植物。株高20-80厘米。根壮茎白色，横走于地下，密集，节部生有鳞片，先端尖有甜味。性味：甘、寒。杆丛生，直立，单叶互生，集于基部，老时基部常有破碎呈纤维状的叶鞘。叶片扁平，条行或条状披针形，夏季开花，圆锥花序圆柱状。花银白色，分枝密集，小穗长3-4毫米，具柄。颖果椭圆形，暗褐色。被白色长柔毛。
