芽鳞是指叶特化或退化成鳞片状。鳞叶有三种类型：革质鳞叶，通常覆于芽的外侧，又称为芽鳞，如橡皮树、玉兰；肉质鳞叶，如贝母；膜质鳞叶，如姜的根状茎和荸荠球茎上的鳞叶。每朵花具芽鳞状托叶4-6枚，每层1枚，深褐色、革质，外面密被浅黄绿色。鳞片脱落后留下的芽鳞痕，因为无明显的节间，芽鳞痕密集，易于和叶痕区别，所以可以根据其判断枝条的年龄和年伸长量。
形态特征：常绿乔木，高可达5米，芽鳞密被白灰色丝光质短伏毛。
