船舶说明是指出租人对船舶的情况，在合同中所作的陈述(representation)。它使船舶特定化，是承租人决定是否租用船舶的重要依据，同时构成合同的重要条款。出租人必须保证陈述内容的正确性。如果陈述与事实不符，即为错误陈述，简称误述(misrepresentation)。如果出租入提供的船舶与合同约定的不符，承租人有权拒绝接受或解除合同，承租人因此遭受损失的，出租人应当负赔偿责任。
