液体压强中与大气联通（即与空气接触的液面）叫做自由液面（free surface），即船舶倾斜时船内舱柜中能自由变动的液体表面。例如淡水、燃油等液体舱柜未装满时，液面随船的倾斜而变动，保持与船外水面平行。当液面因船舶倾斜而自由变动时，液体的形状及其重心位置即产生变化，使船舶稳性降低。在船宽方向将舱柜隔小，可限制液体的移动幅度，如油船即采取这一措施。 自由液面效应：液体有表面张力，表面张力总是使其表面积最小，即自由液面总是平的。
