自然伽马测井记录的是能量大于100keV的所有伽马光子造成的计数率或标准化读数。它只能反映地层中放射性核素的总含量，无法分辨地层中含有放射性核素的种类，地层所能提供的信息没有得到充分的利用。为了弥补自然伽马测井的不足，研制了自然伽马能谱测井，通过对伽马射线能谱进行分析，不仅可以了解地层放射性总的水平，还可定量测量不同核素的含量，从而得到更多的测井信息。
