脑外伤指由于外物造成的、头脑部肉眼可见的伤，一般可引起严重的后果。脑外伤常引起不同程度的永久性功能障碍。这主要取决于损害是在脑组织的某个特定区域（局灶性）还是广泛性的损害（弥散性）。不同区域的脑损害可引起不同的症状，局灶性症状包括运动、感觉、言语、视觉、听觉异常等症状。而弥散性脑损害常影响记忆、睡眠或导致意识模糊和昏迷。
