肾脏的生理功能主要是排泄代谢产物及调节水、电解质和酸碱平衡，分泌多种活性物质，维持机体内环境稳定，以保证机体的正常生理功能。肾炎是由免疫介导的、炎症介质（如补体、细胞因子、活性氧等）参与的，最后导致肾固有组织发生炎性改变，引起不同程度肾功能减退的一组肾脏疾病，可由多种病因引起。在慢性过程中也有非免疫、非炎症机制参与。
