能力分组是资本主义国家小学班级编制的一种方法。起源于美国。它是根据智力测验和教育测验，把同一班级的学生分为“优”、“中”、“劣”等组，以不同的进度学习同一样的课程，按能力（成绩）升降，每年调整一次。优组可以四年半毕业，劣组延长至八年。英国中等学校入学新生也采取这种制度，根据智力测验的结果，使儿童分别进入文法学校，技术学校和现代学校。只有文法学校的毕业生能享受进入高等学校的机会。其他二类学校的毕业生升入高等学校的机会很少。
