肺鱼类是鱼类的‘老祖宗’。肺鱼类种类极少，仅有3属5种。平时用鳃呼吸，当水域干涸时可用鳔直接呼吸空气，故称肺鱼。属于脊椎动物，是现在生存硬骨鱼中最古老、形态最特殊的1支淡水鱼类。腭方软骨与头颅愈合。颌为“自接式”。沿着以进步性的骨胳的软骨化和奇鳍与偶鳍的变异为标志的方向发展的。
