“肝肾同源”理论源于《内经》。“肝肾同源”是指肝肾的结构和功能虽有差异，但其起源相同，生理病理密切相关，可采用“肾肝同治” 的治疗法则。在先天，肝肾共同起源于生殖之精；在后天，肝肾共同受肾所藏的先后天综合之精的充养。“人始生，先成精，精成而脑髓生”（《灵枢。经脉》），“肾生骨髓，髓生肝”（《素问。阴阳应象大论》）。故“肝肾同源”又即肝肾的结构和功能体系通过某些中心环节而密切相关。“肝肾同源于精血”意即肝肾的结构和功能体系通过“精血”这一中心环节而密切相关。
