联机检索系统指把计算机检索中心和终端用户以通讯线路联结起来，终端输入提问可以直接得到答案的计算检索系统。计算机检索中心建立数据库以实现“信息资源共享”。60年代初开始了联机检索试验。1962年，美国麻省理工学院利用BM—7094型计算机进行了世界上最早的联机检索试验。进入70年代，大批成熟了的脱机系统纷纷转变为联机系统。计算机检索网络化在70年代处在第一代星状网络阶段和第二代树形星状网络阶段，进入80年代，发展为第三代环形分布网络阶段。
