考察报告的概念有广义与狭义之分。广义的考察报告是指作者为了了解某地区的基本情况，或者为了获取某项科研任务的科学数据或证据，根据一定的科学标准，亲自进行考察活动，并在此基础上写成文章，如考察散记、考察札记、考察日记，以及一些学术性的报告等，统称为考察报告。是一种重要的应用写作文体。
