罚息是借款人在规定的日期未还款造成的逾期而交纳的罚金。贷款人可以将贷款延期，此时贷款人一般会修改原先的期限，在剩余的贷款期间，贷款人会提高利率，这个新的利率称为违约利息率。
对不能按时支付的利息，按罚息利率计收复利。
