缩绒又称毡化性。其形成原因是毛纤维（羊毛）正鳞片摩擦系数小于逆鳞片摩擦系数的差微摩擦效应。缩绒能使织物质地紧密，长度缩短，平方米重量及厚度增加，强力提高，弹性和保暖性增强。经过缩绒的羊毛衫其表面显露出一层绒毛，使外观优美，手感丰厚柔软，色泽柔和。另外缩绒产生的绒毛对羊毛衫原有的某些疵点起到淡化和掩盖作用，使其不致明显地暴露在织物表面。
