高等植物细胞分裂末期，在隔膜形成体的中央生成的薄膜结构称为细胞板。随着分裂终期的进行，隔膜形成体的逐渐膨大，细胞板呈离心性发育。把一个母细胞分成两个子细胞。细胞板早期的成分是果胶质。随着隔膜的完成最后变为纤维质的初生壁。
此后一些高尔基体小泡和内质网小泡在成膜体上聚集破裂释放果胶类物质，小泡膜融合于成膜体两侧形成细胞板(cell plate)，细胞板在成膜体引导下向外生长直至与母细胞的侧壁相连。
