线谱是由频率离散的成分组成的谱。例如，某个声音只含有一个频率，那么它的频谱只有一根线；若有n个频率成分，它的频谱就含有n根线。 在笛、提琴等乐器所发声音的频谱中，具有一系列分立的频率成分，在频谱图上是一系列谱线。频率最低的成分叫做基音，其他频率较高的成分叫做泛音。在乐音中，泛音的频率是基音的整倍数，因此听起来是和谐的。
