细度模数是表征天然砂粒径的粗细程度及类别的指标。细度模数越大，表示砂越粗。普通混凝土用砂的细度模数范围在3.7-1.6，以中砂为宜，或者用粗砂加少量的细砂，其比例为4:1。
如砂石不干净(泥含量较大)、砂的细度模数过高或过低等，也会使混凝土强度降低、泌水性增加。
