紫云英又名翘摇，红花草，草子，原产中国。喜温暖湿润条件，有一定耐寒能力，全生育期间要求足够的水分，紫云英对土壤要求不严,以砂质和粘质壤土较为适宜。耐盐性差,属豆科、黄芪属。二年生草本植物。主根较肥大，侧根入土较浅，茎呈圆柱形，中空，柔嫩多汁，有疏茸毛。叶多数为奇数羽状复叶，花为伞形花序，一般腋生，少顶生，荚果两列，联合成三角形，种子肾状，种皮光滑,根、全草和种子可入药，有祛风明目，健脾益气，解毒止痛之效。是中国主要蜜源植物之一。
