素域是一种重要的域，指不含任何真子域的域。任何一个域F都有单位元e，考虑加群{0，±e，±2e，…，±me，…}，它有两种可能： 1.对任意非零整数m，me≠0，若S={ne/me|m，n为整数，m≠0}，则S是F的子域且同构于有理数域，此时称F的特征(数)为零； 2.存在正整数m，me=0，若p是使pe=0的最小正整数，则p必为素数，称为F的特征(数)，若S={0，e，…，(p-1)e}，则S是F的子域且与整数环模p的域同构，当F=S时,称F是素域,因此任意域都含有一个素子域。
