等高面是指海拔高度相等的点组成的空间平面。如海平面就是海拔高度为零的等高面。因此，它是一个平行于海平面的平面。 天气预报所用的地面天气图就是海拔高度为零的等高面图。气压的分布是用等高面上等压线的分布来表示的，等压线是某一海拔高度相等的等高面与空中若干个不同等压面相割，在等高面上所形成的许多交线。如果各地气压相等，则等压面就是等高面，那么，等高面上无等压线。
