端，顶也，意为开端伊始。端月是指农历的正月，一年的开始为正。农历正月是传统节日较多的一个月份。如正月初一春节，正月初二回娘家，正月初五，过破五，接财神，正月十五元宵节。《史记索隐》在《秦楚之际月表》“端月”下注称因避始皇讳，由于秦始皇帝正月在赵国降生，取名“赵政（赵正）”，所以秦始皇作了秦王之后，为避讳，其臣民便改称正月为端月。
