章草，是书法的传统书体之一，是早期的草书，始于秦汉年间，由草写的隶书演变而成的标准草书。章草是“今草”的前身，今草产生于东汉末，是从章草变化来的。正如李志敏所说：“临于池，酌于理，师于物，得于心，悟于象，然后始入草书妙境。” 与“今草”的区别主要是保留隶书笔法的形迹，上下字独立而基本不连写。 章草，是隶书演进到草书阶段相应派生出来的一种书体。它属于草书由胚胎时期逐渐走向规范化过程中的一种体段。
