广义的空气检测是指对空气的组成成分的检测。狭义的空气检测，主要是从应用的角度，重点研究的是室内空气检测。它是指室内指装饰材料、家具等含有的对人体有害的物质，释放到家居、办公环境中造成的装修污染，来检测空气质量。国家2006年颁布实施的《民用建筑工程室内环境污染控制规范》列出五种主要污染物：甲醛、苯、氨气、总挥发性有机化合物TVOC、放射性氡等。
