稳性，是指船舶所具有的抵抗外力不使其倾覆，当外力消失后能回复到原平衡位置的能力。按船舶倾斜方向，可分为横稳性和纵稳性；按外力性质和计及船舶倾斜角速度与否，可分为初稳性和大倾角稳性；按船舶破舱进水与否，可分为完整稳性和破舱进水稳性。如无特别说明，一般系指横稳性。横稳性不足会导致船舶发生倾覆沉船事故。中国《船舶与海上设施法定检验技术规则》对国际和非国际航行海船规定了必须满足的具体稳性指标要求。
