稳定核就是稳定核素的原子核，核素可分为稳定核素和不稳定核素（具有放射性）两类。原子核稳定的核素是不会发生自发衰变定核素。 已发现的具有稳定核天然稳定核素只有270余种，而放射性核素约有2500种，其中绝大部分是人工制造的。原子序数Z≤82的核元素，都有天然存在稳定核，每种核素都有一个或几个稳定的同位素（除锝和钜外）；Z≥83的核素只有放射性核素，Z>92的核素称为超铀核素。
