离心过滤以离心力作为推动力，在具有过滤介质(如滤网、滤布)的有孔转鼓中加入悬浮液，固体粒子截留在过滤介质上，液体穿过滤饼层而流出，最后完成滤液和滤饼分离的过滤操作。按严格定义，离心过滤仅是指滤饼层表面留有自由液层，即经过滤形成的滤饼层内始终充满液体的阶段。这在工业上很少应用。工业上所应用的离心过滤，包括自由液面渗入滤饼层内部液体的脱除，有时还包括洗涤滤饼的水的脱除。离心过滤和离心脱水操作似乎很相似，但在流动机理和计算方法上是完全不同的。
