离层原一般是指直接顶与老顶间的离层，就是说随着工作面的推进，直接顶发生变形，老顶也发生变形，在直接顶跨落之前，直接顶和老顶都存在一个最大挠度，如果直接顶最大挠度不大于老顶的最大挠度就不离层，反之， 就发生离层；简单的说就是直接顶与老顶之间的相互分离。 离层现广义来说指顶板不同岩层之间由于不同步下沉而产生的层与层之间的下沉量之差，在多层岩层构成的顶板内，可能在多处产生离层。离层多数发生在岩性差别较大的岩层之间。
