离别诗是伤感型、豪迈型的一种书面情感表达，重团聚、怨别离，是中华民族的传统心理。千百年来，故国乡土之思、骨肉亲人之念、挚友离别之感牵动了很多人的心弦，"别离"自然成为我国古典诗歌中歌咏的重要内容。 离别诗的代表诗人有柳宗元，王勃，白居易，王维等。
表现在离别诗上，中国诗多浓重的悲剧色彩，而西方爱情离别诗虽伤感，却充满喜剧色彩、乐观。
