禅让（拼音：shàn ràng），是指统治者生前活着的时候把首领之位让给别人，“禅”意为“在祖宗面前大力推荐”，“让”指“让出帝位”。 尧是黄帝以后比较著名的部落联盟首领，尧去世前，尧把部落联盟首领位置让于舜，推舜为帝。这种让位，历史上称为“禅让”。 唐尧传位给虞舜，同时传了允执厥中四个字；虞舜传位给大禹，成为五千年治国的国家哲学。 人们世代尊称尧舜禹为上古先王，尧舜禹相传：“人心惟危，道心惟微，惟精惟一，允执厥中。”
孔子虽讲到尧舜禹禅让，但实际并未提倡实行禅让；
