社会地位（social status），有狭义与广义之分。狭义指社会等级制度或分层制度中的排列位置、权力、声望、职业、财富的象征；广义指个体在一定社会关系体系中所处的位置。后者被认为具有严格的社会学意义，反映了个体与社会整体的关系及在与社会整体互动关系中的社会身份。特征：（1）普遍性，凡社会成员无一不在社会群体中占据一定位置，不论其地位的高低贵贱；（2）多重性，人的社会关系是多方面的，在社会空间占据的位置与社会的联系也并非单一，但其中以经济地位为最重要，在阶级社会中集中体现为阶级地位；（3）不管是自然形成的（如性别、血缘），还是社会分工的产物（如职务等），都须得到社会的公认；（4）规定了与之相应的权利、义务、责任，即美国人类学家林顿所谓的“权利和义务的综合”；（5）与社会角色的关系密不可分，演化出“地位—角色理论”这一颇具影响的社会学中程理论（参见“地位角色理论”）。
