在某些磁性单晶薄片或非晶态RE-TM(稀土-过渡族元素)合金薄膜中，没有外加磁场时，如果材料具有垂直于膜面的磁各向异性，并且磁晶各向异性常数K和饱和磁化强度MS满足一定条件，则形成许多蜿蜒曲折的条状磁畴。如果沿薄单晶片(或薄膜)的法线方向加一偏磁场H，则随H的增大，磁化方向与H反向的那些条状畴缩小，在一定的偏磁场下会收缩成圆柱形磁畴。从薄膜的表面上看，是一些圆形的磁畴，就象漂浮在水面上的小泡一样，且在磁场的作用下它们会移动。因此，把这种圆柱状的磁畴称为磁泡，有时也称作泡畴。利用磁泡的移动可以构成移位寄存器。如果能够控制磁泡的产生和消灭，将磁泡的产生和消灭作为写“1”和写“0”，并能检测磁泡的有无，从而读出原先写入的数码“1”和“0”，那么就可以制成磁泡存储器。
