磁体上磁性最强的部分叫磁极。磁体周围存在磁场，磁体间的相互作用就是以磁场作为媒介的。一个磁体无论多么小都有两个磁极，可以在水平面内自由转动的磁体，静止时总是一个磁极指向南方，另一个磁极指向北方，指向南的叫做南极（S极），指向北的叫做北极（N极）。之间呈现同名磁极相互排斥、异名磁极相互吸引的现象。
