古代中国人民把长方形的刻石叫碑。把圆首形的或形在方圆之间，上小下大的刻石，叫碣。秦始皇刻石纪功，大开树立碑碣的风气。东汉以来，碑碣渐多，有碑颂、碑记、又有墓碑，用以纪事颂德，碑的形制也有了一定的格式。后世碑碣名称往往混用。
