石墨化多用于指钢的石墨化。钢件在工作温度和应力长期作用下，会使碳化物分解成游离的石墨，这个过程也是自发进行的，称为P热强钢的石墨化过程、它不但消除了碳化物的作用，而 且石墨相当于钢中的小裂纹，使钢的强度和塑性显著降低而引起钢件脆断。通常把铸铁中的石墨形成过程称为石墨化过程。
