矮星系（Dwarf galaxies）是光度最弱的一类星系﹐在5万秒差距之外看不到，其绝对星等M 为-8～-16等，有的矮星系是椭圆星系﹐也有的是I型不规则星系。这两种矮星系都是小的﹐成员星通常也不多。 不规则矮星系包含着星族星族Ⅱ的。椭圆矮星系是椭圆星系中质量小的星系。它们与球状星团很类似﹐二者的不同仅仅在于前者直径约为后者的10倍。所有星系中最常见的竟是矮星系。
矮星系也许比螺旋状星系含有更多的暗物质。
