相互保险公司(Mutual Insurance Company)是被保险人为保障自己的经济利益而创设的一种合作性保险组织。其特点是被保险人同时也是保险人，保险资本通过由各成员认缴的方式聚集，并接受外部的参股资金。非寿险业中，公司的业务仅限于内部成员; 在寿险业务中，保单持有人，尤其是盈利性保单持有人在取得保单后即成为公司的股东。公司收入在除去偿付损失、营业开支和准备金后，如有结余，则一部分可以 “保单分红” 的名义，分配给被保险人，其余则用以加强公司的财力，但仍属于保单持有人的公有财产。在业务经营出现亏损时，要用向保单持有人摊收保险费或动用盈余金的方式予以补充。
