目录学是研究目录工作形成和发展的一般规律即研究书目情报运动规律的科学。我国古代很早就有人注意到目录学的作用，西汉时，刘向、刘歆父子就撰有《别录》《七略》等书，以后历代均有专著。南宋郑樵有《通志．校雠略》，至清代，章学诚著成《校雠通义》，更总结了目录学的丰富经验。反映我国古代著述的规模最大、最全的目录是《四库全书总目提要》和《四库全书简明目录》。
