盂兰盆节，节期在每年农历七月十五日的节日，也称盂兰盆会、中元节。需要注意，一定意义上，中元节归属道教，盂兰盆节归属佛教，七月半祭祖节归民间世俗。有些地方俗称该节日为鬼节、施孤、斋孤、地官节等。 印度佛教仪式中佛教徒为了追荐祖先举行“盂兰盆会”，佛经中《盂兰盆经》以修孝顺励佛弟子的旨意，合乎中国慎终追远的俗信，于是益加普及。中国从梁代开始照此仿行，相沿成中元节。不过后来除设斋供僧外，还增加了拜忏、放焰口等活动。
