皮脂的成分比较复杂，主要含有蜡脂、甘油三酸脂、游离脂肪酸，还混有上皮细胞代谢后产生的磷脂和胆固醇脂。皮脂属于油性，对皮肤有滋润作用，藉以防止干燥和皲裂。皮脂里的脂肪酸能杀灭细菌，并能抵御霉菌和病毒，堪称皮肤的天然屏障。鉴于皮脂里含有机体所不需要的脂溶性代谢废物，因此皮脂有一定的排泄作用。 皮脂对皮肤有防护、滋润的作用，但是皮脂过多就会形成脂溢性皮炎，比如粉刺、痘痘、暗疮、头皮屑等等。
