白蛉属双翅目、长角亚目、白蛉科，除叮人吸血外，其在中国传播内脏利什曼病。此病的病原体为杜氏利什曼原虫，而白蛉为传播媒介。它是一类体小多毛的吸血昆虫，成虫体长 1.5－4mm，呈灰黄色，全身密被细毛。目前全世界已知500多种，中国已报告近40种，重要种类有中华白蛉指名亚种和中华白蛉长管亚种等。
