主要分布在西藏东南部察隅一带的额曲、察隅曲、格多曲和杜莱曲流域。到1995年12 月，人口共有1494人。 登人有自己的语言，属汉藏语系藏缅语系。登人讲两种话，分别有各自的自称。讲达让话的登人自称"达让"，讲格曼话的登人自称"格"。
