病机，是指疾病发生、发展、变化及其结局的机理。以阴阳五行、气血津液、藏象、经络、病因和发病等基础理论，探讨和阐述疾病发生、发展、变化和结局的机理及其基本规律，即病机学说。 当致病因素作用于机体，导致疾病的发生。由于人体正气强弱不一，病变部位有深浅，阴阳平衡状态有别，邪气性质与盛衰亦有差异，在疾病过程中的病机也是随着正邪消长而不断变化的。因此，疾病发生的机理，有不同的分类方法，可以区分为病机总纲、基本病机、和具体病机等不同的层次。
