电火花成形机电火花加工又称放电加工(简称EDM),是一种直接的新工艺。由于放电过程中可以见到火花,故称电火花加工与金属切削加工的原理完全不同,在放电加工过程中,电源由电缆分别到达工件与电极之间产生电动势,两者因伺服机构的控制逐渐接近,其间隙则逐渐减少时,则绝缘液被击穿成导体就会有一定电火花通过,这个过程就是一个放电过程。在每秒内有数千次的火花产生,脉冲性电火花放电产生局部瞬间的高温这样在材料表面产生很高的热能,同时绝缘液中的带电离子高速冲击材料表面,从而达到腐蚀材料接触面的目的。
