电子对为位于同一分子轨道的一对电子。 根据泡利不相容原理，一原子中的电子不能有同一量子数，若电子要留在同一分子轨道中（主量子数、角量子数、磁量子数一致），需改变其自旋量子数。电子为费米子，其自旋为 -1/2 或 +1/2，因此一分子轨道中只能有一对电子。 因在同一分子轨道中的电子对自旋方向相反，它们的磁矩会互相抵消。有时侯电子对受到外磁场影响，产生净磁矩，形成抗磁性现象。
