甲状舌管囊肿是指在胚胎早期甲状腺发育过程中甲状舌管退化不全、不消失而在颈部遗留形成的先天性囊肿。甲状舌管囊肿的发生与性别无显著关系，男女均可发生，可发生于任何年龄，但以30岁以下青少年为多见。囊肿可发生于颈前正中舌盲孔至胸骨切迹之间的任何部位，以舌骨体上下最常见，有时可偏向一侧。
