田土也可称土田，内容复杂，除耕地外包括池塘、荒山、坟场、滩涂、屋基、港岸等各种非农业用地，范围广泛。耕地在明代也有称为“地亩”的，一般人称为熟田，包括官田和民田。在研究明代经济史时，绝不能把“田土”与耕地画等号，耕地只是“田土”中的一部分。可以肯定，洪武二十六年《诸司职掌》的850 余万顷这个数字应是全国的田土总数，其中包括已耕地和可耕的荒地。
