用材林是以生产木材、竹材为主要目的的森林。是我国最普遍的林种。可分为一般用材林、纤维用材林 (造纸、人工纤维原料等)、矿柱林等。衡量用材林质量高低的标志是单位面积上立木蓄积量和出材率 (即生产原木的数量与生产该原木的立木蓄积量之比)、木质及经济价值。营造用材林要选择生长快、木质好、产量高、经济价值大、与当地条件相适应的树种，并适时适度地进行抚育间伐，以加快林木生长，缩短成林期。
