生态脆弱性与敏感性概念相近,定义中有部分重叠,在此也将生态脆弱性概念提出讨论,以便区分概念。生态环境脆弱性研究始于20世纪80年代对生态过渡带(Eocotne)的探讨,之后许多学者在生态环境过渡带的基础上定义了生态脆弱性和脆弱生态环境。 生态脆弱性定义为:是生态系统在特定时空尺度相对于外界干扰所具有的敏感反应和自我恢复能力,是生态系统的固有属性。由此可见,敏感性是脆弱性必不可分的组成部分,脆弱性是敏感性和自我恢复能力叠加的结果。
