炸药在岩土中爆炸，一部分爆炸能量转化为弹性波在地层中传播，对地层和建筑物产生同天然地震相似的影响。根据工业爆破的经验，爆破产生的地震能量大约占爆炸总能量的2～6％；全封闭地下核爆炸近场的地震能量也在这个范围之内。尽管它只占总能量的一小部分，但当爆炸的药量很大时，足以对爆炸中心附近的地下工程设施和地面建筑造成不同程度的破坏。一次露天矿剥离工程爆破药量常达几千吨甚至万吨以上，井下开采进行爆破所使用的药量有的也达到200～300吨。
